Pro Bono Program

Greater Boston Legal Services (GBLS) operates one of the most active pro bono programs in Massachusetts. The program partners with private attorneys, law firms, and corporate legal departments to extend GBLS’s capacity to provide free legal assistance to low-income individuals and families.

Purpose and Impact

The pro bono program helps GBLS serve more clients than its staff alone could reach. Through volunteer support, GBLS provides critical representation in areas such as:

• Housing – defending tenants against eviction and preserving affordable housing.
• Family Law – assisting survivors of domestic violence with restraining orders, custody, and support.
• Employment – addressing wage theft and workplace discrimination.
• Immigration – representing clients seeking asylum or lawful status.
• Public Benefits – helping individuals access vital support such as SNAP, SSI, or unemployment benefits.
• Advocating for Children with Disabilities – Represent children wrongfully denied Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits to help them and their families make ends meet.

Volunteer Opportunities

Pro bono volunteers include attorneys, paralegals, and law students who:

• Represent clients directly under GBLS supervision.
• Offer limited advice or consultation at legal clinics.
• Assist with research, document preparation, or community outreach.

GBLS provides training, mentorship, and materials to ensure volunteers feel supported and confident in their work.

Partnerships

GBLS collaborates closely with major Boston law firms, bar associations, and corporate counsel programs. These partnerships strengthen the legal aid network and reinforce the shared commitment to justice for all.
